Rearing options for Holstein bull calves to 12 weeks
Initiated by the Beyond Calf Exports Stakeholders Forum, this project brought together academic, veterinary and industry information on the economics and husbandry of rearing Holstein bull calves. Increasing the numbers of black and white cattle raised in the UK should result in a reduction of the numbers of calves exported and, it is hoped, be of benefit to the UK industry whilst addressing animal welfare concerns.
This project has reviewed current information on rearing Holstein bull calves to 12 weeks and developed this into a comprehensive, web-based report for dairy farmers, specialist rearers and beef producers. Economic analysis of the various rearing systems is presented within an Excel spreadsheet through which farmers are able to review the costs and benefits of entering into Holstein bull beef rearing.
